INSPECTION, TESTING and CERTIFICATION of ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS
(CITY & GUILDS 2391 PART 1)
COURSE 150: 4 DAYS + examinations
Aimed at electrical personnel who either carry out, or supervise, the testing and inspection of installations, this course is designed to meet the needs of those required to sit the City & Guilds 2391 examination. The course also provides for the NICEIC & ECA requirements for Qualified Supervisor status. Candidates for the C&G 2391 examination should note that following the course each individual is also required to attend a half-day practical assessment and a two-and-a-half hour written examination.
PARTICIPANTS
Prospective candidates should have recently completed the IEE Wiring Regulations (City & Guilds 2381) qualification, course 310.
COURSE PRESENTATION
The course is designed to prepare candidates for the written and practical examinations. The emphasis is on achieving success and Technical Training pride themselves on their success rate of 80-90% in the examinations, against a UK average of 50%. In addition, participants gain the skills and knowledge necessary to actually perform the inspection and testing procedures. Participants are able to practice on purpose-built training rigs which simulate electrical installations. Full course documentation is provided.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
On completion of the course, participants will be able to
- understand the dangers associated with testing
- recognise the precautions necessary for the protection of personnel and equipment
- understand the statutory and non-statutory requirements for testing of installations
- carry out visual inspection of electrical installations in accordance with the Regulations
- understand the requirements for periodic inspection and testing
- perform appropriate electrical tests including the following:
- continuity of protective conductors
- continuity of ring final circuit conductors
- insulation resistance
- polarity
- earth fault loop impedance
- RCD and functional testing
- determine appropriate test pass levels and interpret results correctly
- correctly complete the relevant documentation (the IEE periodic inspection report, schedule of inspections and schedule of test results).
Successful completion of the course leads to the award of City & Guilds 2391 Part 1 - Level 3 Certificate in Inspection, Testing & Certification of Electrical Installations.
What do candidates on the inspection and testing course actually do?
Once a candidate enrolls on the inspection and testing course, we issue a pre-course learning pack consisting of our electricians guide to inspection and testing books and an example of the examination paper that they can expect at the end of the course, with worked examples of the answers that we suggest. Prior to the course, candidates can work through this and contact us for help or guidance to help them to prepare.

On the first day of the course, candidates are fully debriefed regarding the answers that they have provided in the pre-course question papers.
On the course itself, we begin by explaining the legal issues to candidates, so that they can answer questions about the competence issues and legal and safety aspects of inspection and testing in the final exam.
We then look at how electrical installations should be visually inspected, bearing in mind the type of inspection (minor works, periodic, or full inspections) required. Candidates are provided with course notes to guide them and of course they have their own copies of our electricians guide to inspection and testing books to refer to. The long list of inspection items that should be checked is consigned to memory by practising this on some demonstration boards that we have specially designed for the course.

The course then looks at the required testing, and to help consign the sequence of testing to memory, we have specially designed practice boards that the candidates can perform the testing on.

In order to perform the tests we use a range of industrial test instruments.

To help prepare candidates for the actual examination, we pose a long series of typical questions that they may encounter, and we also provide reference sheets to help in the process of revision for the examination.

The examination takes place at a time allocated by City & Guilds (normally on a thursday evening at 6.30pm to 9pm), but the practical assessment is scheduled by us at a convenient time shortly after completion of the course itself. The practical assessment is conducted on specially-designed rigs which simulate a real electrical installation.

Our examination rigs (and all the practice boards shown above) are all specially constructed so that they can be moved around the British Isles to provide the inspection and testing course on employers' premises.
Some employers prefer that candidates learn about inspection and testing of electrical installations without having to undergo the City & Guilds examinations: Please call us if you would like to discuss this.
