1st Amendment to the 17th Edition
COURSE 305: 0.5 DAY: Max 8 Candidates
In July 2011 the first amendment to the 17th Edition IET Wiring Regulations is published. It becomes effective from January 2012. The most significant change is to the certificates and reports used for inspection and testing. There are various other changes, for example to the sections on electromagnetic disturbances and devices for protection against overvoltage. There are two new special locations, covering medical locations and operating or maintenance gangways.
PARTICIPANTS
Everyone concerned about the various changes to the Regulations should attend this informative course, especially designers, installers and inspectors.
COURSE PRESENTATION
The course is presented in an interesting and informative way, with frequent reference to the technical content of the actual Regulations. Comprehensive course notes are provided to guide the candidates through the various areas of interest. Sample City & Guilds-style questions are used as an assessment to ensure candidates have absorbed all the key points of the course.

Successful completion of the course leads to the award of the Technical Training Solutions competence certificate 305: 1st Amendment to the 17th Edition.
What do candidates on the 1st Amendment to the 17th Edition course actually do?
We begin by looking at the impact of the amendment on existing as opposed to new installations and clarifying what would need to be changed. The candidates are then shown the new style of Regulation numbering. We then look at the new definitions introduced by the amendment and the effects of the amendment on Part 3 of the Regulations.
Of more interest to most candidates, however, are the practical issues surrounding the withdrawal of the BS1361, BS88-2-2 and BS88-2-6 fuses and we look at how these would be replaced in future installations. The Amendment also introduces new requirements for surge protection devices and we look at these too. The various changes to the special locations are quite important - most importantly the new section on medical locations, which interests people working in hospitals etc. The following are extracted pages from our course notes that deal with these subject areas:

The candidates are then shown the new requirements for inspection and testing that the first amendment to the 17th Edition introduces. We show demonstration versions of the new condition reports, the schedules of circuit details and the new versions of the schedule of inspection forms for use with the condition reports for periodic inspection and testing. The course finishes with a short multiple-choice question paper, in the style of the City & Guilds examination used for the Wiring Regulations course. This tests the candidates' ability to understand the key teaching points of the day. The assessment is fully debriefed and any misunderstanding are clarified so that every candidate knows what the correct answers to the assessment should be.
